Spacious Imagination

Movement

Soul is our birthright. Movement is our birthright. The embodied soul moving is our passage to joy.

We are bodies made to enjoy being on the earth, in the gravitational field, walking, stomping, swinging our arms, engaging in contactful bodily play with self and one another.

Unlike wild animals, we do not get to enjoy fur flying or baring huge canine teeth. We are domesticated and have learned to “use our words” - and only some words, at that. Yet our full endowment is not to be tamed; we hunger for full expression of our embodied being. We hunger to experience wild, unfettered play.

In more spiritual terms, we are instruments. Our flesh resonates and is made to be plucked, vibrated and strummed. We are born with the capacity to feel, listen and resonate deeply when we are touched or moved by anything – inside, out, or beyond – including the simple, miraculous rhythm of our own breath.

In movement practices we move our awareness right into the heart of our matter. Like the hokey pokey, we place our whole bodyself in the moment. We listen and move: receptivity and action in conversation with one another.

We are created to receive and act at one and the same moment. In aware movement practice, we discover and enjoy this simple truth. In moments of receiving and acting at the selfsame moment, everything is present, and everything is full, including our emptiness.

Movement is moment by moment. Life is moment by moment. In aware movement, we attend to our existing, moment by moment. We find ourselves through the in-breath and the out-breath. We turn towards our own bodyself in hospitable, welcoming movement and bask in the truth of our aliveness.

There is also the over-the-top joy of truly surrendering, being moved from the core, expressing I Am through release and letting go. Along with breath, music is the Beloved whose arms will hold us when we choose to let go. Music and movement beckon: come, be yourself, with yourself, in moving community. This is where you belong.

We each were born. We each will die. Life is a continual moving and unfolding in between. Are you willing to be awake within this flow of being?

There are so many different kinds of movement practices, including: Buddhist Meditation, Authentic Movement, Contact Improvisation, 5Rhythms (www.gabrielleroth.com; www.spiritweaves.com), Continuum (www.continuummontage.com).

My recommendation: find a local dance community and move your body!
